kohetsu on the facebook page

Thu Nov 28, 2013 9:54 pm

There is a kohetsu featuring on the facebook page with a mirror finish and a darker handle than what is showed on the website. Is this the handle they come with now or this is a custom handle?
BTW i love the darker handle on the one that is on the facebook page.

It's the lighting and the reflections of the black surface it is on. That is the same handle as the one you see on the website.

Maybe so but what I can tell you is the Kohetsu comes with a ho wood/buffulo horn handle.

It looks like someone mirror polished the blade and then stained the handle/saya with a brownish stain.

Very nice job if someone stained the handle. Also, how do you get such a miror polish?

Yes a customer sent me the photo. He put a mirror polish finish on the blade and then he stained his handle to make it dark. It's hard to do mirror finish on the whole blade with stones since the convexing of the blade against a flat stone is trouble. Usually guys use a series of sandpapers or sanding pads or buffing compounds and a grinding wheel (this is dangerous if the edge is on the knife).

Japanese Sword polishers use small finger stones in a progression to mirror polish blades.

He implied he used the stones in the picture but I didn't ask.
