I think it comes down to technique and steel. You never know if you're doing it right when sharpening crap steel.

Now strop it on some cardboard followed by some newsprint...the political editorials make for good edges...strop em away!

Yes trailing strokes work great...If you want to get a better edge wrap a piece of brown grocery bag around your stone...strop the blade about 10-15 times on each side...Paper is the poor mans 10k stone

Ain't that the truth. Knowing how to keep your tools in good repair give you a lot of confidence in using them.
