I find a serrated bread knife is fine for bagels. I have a cheap dexter one at work, it works. I have a Tojiro ITK in my personal kit, it works better. I suppose that a petty would also work, I haven't ever gone that far past a bread knife for breads.

In a pinch I find a petty or paring knife works fine, but a longer knife is certainly helpful in getting straight cuts. I'll use a bread knife whenever possible.

i use a 6 inch utility (tall at the heel)
