I recently received the Ikeda KS clone and after using it for the past few days I want to post my impressions and compare it to the Masamoto KS. Right out if the box the Ikeda feels a little lighter and leaner than my Masamoto KS. The Ikeda weighs in @ 160grams (5.6oz) vs. the Masamoto @ 177grms (6.4oz.). The specs on the CKTG product page list the Ikeda heavier so maybe Mr. Ikeda made the grind on this recent batch a little thinner. Both have the classic KS profile with a perfect distal taper from the spine to the thin pointed Funiyuki style tip. The spine thickness is slightly thinner on the Ikeda. The finish on the Ikeda blade matches the Masamoto's nicely smoothed and rounded spine and choil. The grind is similar , thin and laser like behind the edge convexing gradually to the spine. The Ikeda has a subtle carbon Damascus cladding which has a similar sensitivity to the Monosteel white #2 of the Masamoto. The thin cladding does not dampen the blade feel like other clad knives. The handle on the Masamoto is a D shaped Ho wood with a blond buffalo handle. I am a lefty so I sanded the handle to ease the ridge to make it more lefty friendly. The handle on the Ikeda is a real beauty! It is one of the wenge/tiger maple versions that Isiah is putting on some of higher end knives coming in like the new Tanaka r2, Richmond lasers and others. It is the nicest non custom handle I have seen, octagonal shaped with a seamless joining of the handle and ferrule. It feels like it is made of a single piece of wood. Very nicely done. Like the Masamoto the Ikeda is a great performing blade. It blasts through large tough carrots, celery and onions with ease. No wedging and effortless slicing and chopping. The pointed thin tip handles smaller delicate product. So far the Ikeda is a great compliment to the classic Masamoto. A bonus is the lower price and the AS steel. The KS with its stiffer spine slightly taller blade ht. puts it more in the mid weight class. The Ikeda I have is a lighter mid weight leaning towards a laser. Both are great choices. Bill B.

Bikemen, thanks for the review. Interesting read. My Ikeda is one of the previous batches and I just double checked, mine is 1oz heavier on the nose...interesting.

I had my eye on that knife for a while but I caved to my loyalty to my Masamoto KS. I just love that knife.

I was sharpening my ikeda last night and noticed it wasn't as stiff as my other 240s (which are thicker). I don't notice it so much while using it, but I am very interested in the Masamoto if it is stiffer.

The Masamoto does have a stiffer blade due the thicker spine, both the KS and the Ikeda will have a little flex in the tip . It is not noticeable when you are using either knife. BB
