How much diamond spray on balsa?

Mon Nov 18, 2013 3:53 pm

I'm looking for some guidance on how much of the 1 micron diamond spray sold here to put on a balsa strop and how much use can one expect to get with it before needing to reapply?

I started with 5 pumps of the spray, let it dry for an hour or two and that performed well.

Depnds on the knives you sharpen. 10+ knives in between applications is not unheard of. From now on you will only need 1-2 sprays to refresh the strop. Depending on how big it is.

That's plenty. I usually use about 3 pumps the first time and then 1 spritz occasionally thereafter.

Typically some of the compound or spray and old metal particles will come off on the knife blade, so unless there was too much applied to begin with or it is charged with too much before you strop there shouldn't be an issue with build-up or anything. It isn't like a stone where the pores can get clogged up as you are adding the grit to your chosen media instead of the media being composed of the grit, and you actually want it to get the compound/spray into the pores. Personally I like a smooth, broken-in strop so I don't really ever clean any of mine, plus I'm not sure how you would clean balsa without damaging it somehow. I have seen some people clean a leather strop before to get the nap back if they were using the rough side, but again, I likes 'em smooth. lol
