Im thinking about purchasing a honing rod for my knives. I have a collection of mostly Macs and Globals, with a few Wusthofs and Victorinox's thrown in. I was wondering, would the honing rod make any difference for me if I am regularly sharpening my knives on a 1000/6000 waterstone?

The Mac Black ceramic and the Idahone ceramic rod will work really well with your knives.

The idahone is the one I use. It's around 1200 grit, so if you sharpen off a 6k stone, it will be a coarser edge than right off the stone. But it isn't too aggressive, and it helps to push a knife back into working order. On really thing-at-the-edge carbon steel, it is a sufficient quality of finish and just aggressive enough that it will keep it going for a long time. My Idahone keeps my CCK going strong through weeks of work, just because I'm basically sharpening it on the rod over and over until the bevel needs thinning.
