Honing my Straight

Sun Dec 29, 2013 8:22 am

So I got a Dovo Carbon Straight for Christmas. So first thing to do was to hone it of course :)

So I took the factory edge.

Not particulairly impressive , large random scratches , looks more like a saw than a straight razor , they stropped it with a poor strop because there was some convexity at the edge of the edge.

And I turned it into this.

This required a significant amount of work. I actually had to break out the Atomas (600 and 1200) to get rid of all the convexity it came with. Once I had that accomplished I dropped down to the shaptons (220 and 1k) to remove the diamond scratches. Then I switched over to Japanese Naturals and that's the result.

I did this freehand on 1x6" Edge Pro stones.

Thanks to Ken and Tom for the advice :)

Great Job!

Yes EP stones are great to use on the EP, but they also work well either hand held or put in a standard stoneholder. When used this way the narrower width makes it easier to selectively hone a trouble spot and to even out bevels - smileys and frowns more easily that a full width stone.
