Hardness on the Takeda AS series

Sun Oct 06, 2013 3:37 pm

I heard the stainless clad series have an Rc of about 63-64. Does the same go for the 'normal' AS series?

My personal guess is the AS series is also around an Rc of 63-64 because they use the same grade of AS steel as a core, but maybe the stainless cladding requires a different tempering process which affects the hardening of the steel?

No one knows this?

I don't recall seeing a specific HRC from Takeda. Contact them and ask...I'm sure they'll reply:

Shosui is a very nice guy from what I hear.

However, I've heard any where from 61 to 65 for his original knives with the consensus being in the higher area of that range.

I'm pretty sure his knives are about HRC 63.

Hi Adam,

I've been in contact with Shosui before (ordering knives) and indeed he's a really nice guy :) I've asked him on twitter, but he's a bit busy with a department store sale he's doing, haven't had an answer as of yet.

Thanks Mark, I supposed it was (about) the same as the stainless clad knives he's making.

I started wondering about the Hardness because of an article on zknives.com about Aogami #1, #2 and AS, where Takeda's are mentioned as 61 HRC. According to the article the AS has better wear resistance compared to the #1 and #2 though.

FYI, I got an answer from Yousui from the Takeda factory, Takeda knives have an HRC of about 61 to 63.

Yousui is the guy that showed me how to sharpen on that doughnut sharpening machine they have. Takeda recruited him to work for him 15 years ago at a knife show. Super nice guy.

He is a nice guy, I've got him on Facebook and he's always very generous and always answers questions, as does Shosui of course.
