Given the composition of the steels HAP40 should easily surpass R2. This is with optimal heat treatment and minimal grain growth. Lastly would be blade geometry and intended task of the blade. Get any part of that wrong and it all becomes a guessing game.

Are ZDP189 and M390 the same? IIRC the ZDP189 blade I owned was difficult to shapen, but then kept a good edge.

They're different steels. ZDP189 is made by Hitachi and M390 is made by Bohler. HAP40 is made by Hitachi. I can't recall who makes R-2.

R2 is the same a SG2 and is made by Kobelco.
