We're going to be releasing a san mai line of knives using HAP40 steel and you guys are going to freak out when you try this stuff. I've been using a little shit santoku that they sent me in late November continuously and Sue asked me if I had sharpened the knife yet and I said no. She then said "this is some kind of voodoo knife. It's still really sharp!
I'm going to start doing some education about the steel and the line of knives we're making and I'll use this thread to discuss. They're getting close to being ready and close means another month at least. Needless to say I expect once people get these in their hands they're going to really like it. Think ZDP189 for VG10 prices....
Adam tried the knife but we only discussed it briefly. Shaun has it now but I'm not sure if he's used it yet. Josh tried it for a week at his work as well.

i've seen hap40 steel knives sold somewhere else at pretty good prices. looking forward to these!

You REALLY have my interest peaked with these knives! I am glad it will be a month or so before I'm temped by them though. It will give me time to come up with an excuse as to why I needed another knife so my wife doesn't use it on me!

Hmmmm - an HSS popular for Japanese handplane competion - supposed to be similar to M4 but tougher. The only maker I've heard of is Gihei who also produce the Richmond ZDP189 - but I'd want to see something longer than 210 and hardened to 64-66 (My M4 competition chopper is supposed to be 66 - not that I have any way of confirming this and takes an incredibly fine edge - also a bear to sharpen at this RC)

I haven't used it too much, but to far it takes a silly edge.... silly I said! haha!
The amount of Tungsten in the steel makes it take a very steep edge, and the grain is really nice, it polishes well. I'll get to testing soon, now you got my interest sparked

This steel is really nice. It took an absolute beating and was still sharp when it went to Shaun. I never sharpened it, and family members used it on glass cutting boards.
