Grit Question

Mon Nov 18, 2013 10:53 am

I have Shapton stones starting at 2k. I have been doing all my prep work with Ark stones. I am now wanting to get Shapton stones for the prep work. My question is, is 320 to 1k to much of a jump, or does the 500 cut fast enough for when I need to reprofile a blade?
I don't abuse my knives, but sometimes some one will give me one to sharpen or I will buy one used and they are usually in bad condition.

Another question, should I use a Nagura stone with Shapton Glass Stones?

I go from the 320 to 1k with no problem. I like the 320 only because it's a little faster(I'm impatient!) but the 500 will get the job done just fine. I've never used a Nagura with my Glass Stones but doesn't mean you can't.

Hi Stephan

I've tried using a small diamond plate to make slurry on the gs stones. Can't say it made much difference compared to using one on a more conventional waterstone.

Best thing though is to try it and see if you like it. No harm done either way.
