Gift for culinary student.

Hi Mark,

I am very pleased with the ceramic honer and the Apex sharpening system I purchased from you. Thanks!

My son is probably going to begin a culinary arts program at our local community college. I am interested in getting him a set of knives as a belated high school graduation gift. I was looking at different manufacturers and was feeling that their sets are cheap and gimmicky. I don't feel compelled to get him the cheap accessories such as peelers, etc, and would like to spend the money on reliable, durable cutlery, but something that he wouldn't be devastated by if it were lost or stolen in that environment.

Is there a line of knives you sell that you would suggest for this application. AND, which sizes of knives, and style would be appropriate for cooking school?

Hi James,

There are several useful items that you could get him. Our store is geared toward line cooks.

Tojiroa are good knives that won't break the bank. Get him a gyuto for sure.

So is my Richmond Artifex line. I made these for line cooks and they're the most popular line on the site now.

Also, a knife bag would be an excellent thing to get him.

The mac black ceramic rod or the Idahone ceramic rod would be a good addition to his kit. All of these things are pretty inexpensive and will help give him some basics for school.

I've only ever had a Koobi, and I loved it.....so I can't recommend amongst the others, but the Koobi is out of stock.

JAMES <> All the recommendations above work. The FujiwaraFKM, Tojiro DP & Richmond Artifex are all low price point winners with different pros & cons. FYI: the AEB-L Artifex offers the best steel quality of these 3.

The Tojiro bread knife is top-shelf, but I would save the cash for a student and get the Victorinox @$30 less. http://www.chefknivestogo.com/fowabrkn10.html The Victorinox line in itself is a great low price point workhorse line. Their Fibrox curved semi-stiff boning knife is a great $17 knife.

When it comes to accesories, I would buy him a bench knife
, and a Y-peeler (Kuhns are awesome)
