Rook, I have a soft spot for the guys and gals out there like you that have dedicated their lives to helping and protecting others. I.E. Armed Forces, Firefighters, Police, EMTs, etc. Thank you!

Telemarketing, followed by not having a job.

Worked on the engineering crew of the highway department one summer in 1961. Carried a machete, hand shears and a sledgehammer for three months.
Cleaned out briar patches on the proposed right of way with the machete and shears, drove wooden stakes into rock-hard clay with the sledge.
Learned to like water, though. Also learned that Doritos and Miracle Whip make good sandwiches.
Went through three pairs of Levi's and a half-dozen shirts.
Was in shape for the fall football season, though.
Worst actual job experience was when I was 15 and working ambulance for my father. Train hit gasoline tanker truck at intersection and the truck exploded. Driver burned up.
Getting him out of the truck was a bit of a...hmm can't quite describe that. Anyway, no one else would do it.
MR is right. The calls involving kids were the roughest.

+1 regarding kids. Failed codes (eg cardiac arrests) and cancer in kids is rough. Jeff, locally I do free knife sharpening for Police Fire EMT and Military - They protect me and I feel it's the least I can do for them.

as a kid I worked as a waiter for an insane boss who would serve up anything at all to customers as long as it didn't smell bad...
I served up some pretty disgusting food on that job
