While relaxing the week leading to New Year I thought of one of my closest friends from 35 years ago. We fished, played golf, hung out. Along with our wives we on vacations together. Careers sent us our separate paths geograpically...us to Atlanta and them to Oklahoma. Shortly after I moves to Atlanta, we got a call in the middle of the night from his wife. She had just been awakened by her husband's boss along with the police and others to tell her that he was killed in a car accident while driving to a company conference.

Before moving to Atlanta they going to visit family and stayed a few days with us along with their toddler son. I pulled out the 20lb vcr camcorder and recorded about an hour of video of everyone. Haven't watch it since his death. Lost track of his family.

His son has an unusual name so I figured I see if I could find him. Once I found him I decided to find that video (we moved again). Found it. Crawled in the attic and found an old vcr player. Started researching learned how to make a youtube video so I converted the vcr tape and posted to youtube. Sent the son an email introducing myself and the backgroud story along with links to the youtube videos.

Got a return email from the son on New Years day. He had never seen video of his dad as an adult. He was very young when his dad was killed so the memory was fuzzy. He sent the links to his sister and mom.

I'm so glad that video survived.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope the rest is as good as the first day.

Went out to a casino and left my cash at home. Hour and a half round trip to get my wallet.

My best and most lame new years eve came all in one bundle.

While celebrating with new and old friends on a trip in Brazil I experienced the most intense joy immersed in great food, drink but most importantly a group of people who embraced the holiday.

The lame portion of the night was when I wandered away from the crowd and fire to investigate a large toad on the edge of the fire light. I began taking photos while getting closer and closer to the toad. I got within 5 feet when many Portuguese voices rang out to warn me that the toad was very poisonous, popping my perception of experience traveler and replacing it with lame tourist.

Lessons learned.

Hung out with relatives and fell asleep 15 minutes before midnight! But I soaked some black-eyed peas and cleaned a mess o' collard greens to get ready to make New Year's dinner for a large group of kin. I tried to use my fabulous new Richmond kitchen shears at any opportunity!

Best New Year was spent at the Andes Hotel in NY about '82 or '83. About a dozen of us, all good friends on a Ski weekend. A lot of fresh snow that night and we didn't have to drive anywhere. Cheap drinks and plenty of them. The lamest New Years was last year. The wife and I fell asleep in front of the TV. I woke up about 11:50, woke my girl up and we watched the ball drop then went to bed. Ya know come to think of it, that was a also a pretty good New Year! Keep your expectations small. you'll never be disappointed!

Spent from 7pm to 2am in the emergency room being coughed on by my sick three-year-old. Turned out to be croup cough that had turned into bronchitis... Which I ended up getting. Happy 2014! :P

This was the worst New Years, ever.

Went to a friends house for a Downton Abbey marathon.
For those unfamiliar. Downton Abbey is an English Drama series that follows a wealthy family and their relatives and their servants and their servants relatives and other Landed Gentry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
It gives a whole new meaning to the word dry. A colonoscopy from a vision impaired doctor would have been more fun.

To make the evening more festive, my friend, who does not always pay attention to what he does, pressed the play button on his remote thinking we would watch the next installment of Downton Abbey.
Instead what we did and no one but me noticed, was watch the same episode that we had just watched, again. Start to finish.
A side note, after watching the same episode twice, people in attendance discussed the differences between the two episodes.

Alcohol induced memory loss, no. Keeping in the theme of proper English etiquette we had tea, biscuits and scones.

lamest thing i've done was sneaking into my times square office, and getting a view of my boss with a dude who was NOT his WIFE!

thank goodness they were not in the middle of any hanky panky.

One year, me and 13 of my friends rented a house in the mountains for New Years weekend. We got there at 7pm on New Years Eve and I drank so much I passed out before midnight. I was then woken up at 1am and we drank in the hot tub till 8am. I missed the ball drop but it was the best New Years ever!
