Recently I have gotten into Natural stones, so depending on the edge here is my progression:

400 Latte
1K Ume
Tajima
Meara
Yaginoshima Asagi
and if I am feeling really skippy . . . Nakayama Asagi
Then strop on balsa with 1u diamond

I use my Norton stones using a Japanese technique. usually start with 1000>4000>8000. Then I deburr with newspaper. I have been using a leather strap to hone, but I am thinking of getting a ceramic rod. I usually sharpen about every two weeks, depending on how much I have actually the used the blade.

My stones: 220 Super Naniwa, 1000/5000 Super Naniwa combo stone. Idahone ceramic hone as well. Double sided leather strop from Lee Valley, with 0.5 micron grit sharpening compound on one side.

Touch up the edge with the ceramic hone every couple of weeks. After that, touch up with the 5k waterstone, and finish with both sides of the strop. I rarely have to go back to the 1k grit. The 220 grit is mainly for my friends knives when I offer to sharpen their brutalized blades.

As an aside, a friend recently bought a Richmond Laser with the Aogami Blue Super core (my fave), it was sharp OOTB, but not laser or even super sharp, a little disappointing. I stropped it using both sides of my strop=LASER! BOOM!

I think the ceramic hone trues the edge (i.e. straightens out any little wavers in it, plus deburrs a bit and more), but I don't think it does the same thing a leather strop does. Get the hone by all means, and use it every 2 weeks. I like to think myself as a man of science, but once you sharpen a blade with a waterstone, whatever it is a strop does...is magic!

Craftsman 6x48 belt sander when needed.

Edgepro Pro with EP stones and Chooseras for knives - mostly kitchen knives.

Chisels, plane blades, etc. are done on sandpaper on a granite plate, unless I'm in a hurry, then it's the Worksharp.

Never got an edge I liked from my Tormek. I assume it's me.
