Forcing a patina on semi-stainless blade

Well I was thinking about forcing a patina on my Kikuichi TKC mainly just for aesthetic purposes and was wondering how to go about it and how well it would turn out and some possible pros and cons. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

There were mixed reviews about forcing a patina on a semi-stainless steel. Seems like that is somewhat working against the inherent properties of the steel, but whatever floats your boat is good. Before and after pics (whether it works or not) would be helpful.

Unless you're really good about wiping down your blade while your using it, you going to get a patina/discoloration. IMO, forcing a patina gives you control over how the patina comes out. So you can take your chances and hope for the best, or you can start a patina yourself and have some control over the outcome. I havent had any luck letting a patina form naturally, it always starts to look like crap after a while. Then I have to remove it.

For me, its so much easier to cut an onion, let the juice sit for a while, and start with a some what uniform appearance. It also looks better IMO.

My Kono HD has very little noticeable patina.

Carbons are a different story . . .

It's a good topic so no need to shut it down. If we only answered questions once there would only be about topics on this forum and that would be the end of the whole project. :)

I think it's a good idea to just use the knife for a few months and see how it goes. Mine got some water marks on it after about that much time but that was about it.

I hear you there Mark. Anyway, maybe I will just be a little less careful about wiping 'er off when I am through with it and throughout the day while I am prepping. I just don't own any carbon knives and every time I buy another knife I eventually want another, but on a cooks budget that is a little hard to do.
