Flattening Edge Pro Stones

Tue Jul 23, 2013 5:40 pm

Hi. When flattening stones for an EP on a DMT XXC, what is the best way? I mean sliding back and forth, figure 8's, etc. Dry or with water?
Thanks much.

Under running water. I use as much of the plate as possible.

+1 under running water in the sink - it rapidly washes away the abrasion particles released, thus decreasing wear on the flattening source.

I kinda use a mixture of circles and up & down strokes, turning the stone 180 degrees at the halfway mark.

I still use a pencil to mark the stone first.

Would I be right in saying that its important to make sure one is flattening them evenly front to back if one is using the drill collar method to insure angle accuracy between stones?

Correct branwell.

I use a digital vernier after every 5 x lappings or so just to ensure that my stones are even thickness throughout - this is CRITICAL!!

That is also why I use a circular motion & turn the stone 180 degrees halfway during lapping them.

I always mark my stones with a pencil to monitor lapping depth - do not believe in just checking the color change in the stone surface.

Agree with all of the above. In addition, and I believe MR alludes to this, making the two sides of the stone parallel to each other is important too. For this you can eyeball it. For me, I've built a proprietary jig for doing this when making the stones, improving my initial specifications.

Hi Thanks much for the information, I really appreciate it. What I've been doing with the edges is to just raise the stone up about 10-15 degrees and giving it four or five light sliding motions side to side after I flatten the stones. This about right?
Thanks again.
