First stone purchase question

Hi Mark,

First of all, I wanted to once again thank you for your recommendation of the Konosuke 240 gyuto with the octagonal handle for my left-handed wife. We ended up with the ebony handle because the white ones sold out before I could pull the trigger, and we are extremely happy with it. Its gorgeous and deadly! The thing could shave the back of my hand for months after we bought it. I try to make sure to hone it before and after each use. But here's where my question comes in (prompted by your newsletter which I also enjoy and which as you'll see, is probably about to net you a sale): sharpening. The number of stones and grits and everything are extremely intimidating. I feel like I can probably figure out how to do it through your tutorials, but I wouldn't know which one to buy. My inclination is to get a finer one and just work on it longer, to avoid having to purchase several. We lost the very very tip of the knife to dinging it on the sink a month or so ago too, so I am hoping a sharpening stone will allow me to grind that back into existence. Do you have any suggestions? We also have cutco knives with (smooth edges) that we got for our wedding - it would be ideal to find a stone that could sharpen both types of steel, as those have dulled dramatically the past two years too. The review of the natural japanese stone for $49.99 in your newsletter was intriguing and I was wondering if that's what I'm looking for, or not. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

For you, I think the best way to go is to get a combo stone. I like this one the best out of about 7-8 that we offer:

If you want to get an inexpensive stone holder and flattener I have a paired set here:

You can do without the flattener and use coarse 120 wet dry sandpaper. You can forgo the holder and use a damp dish towel on a counter.
