First J-nat

Sat Jul 28, 2012 2:40 am

So, looks like my first J-nat will arrive tomorrow via CKTG's exemplary shipping service. I've gotten some good advice from my Tarheel friend JB, was wondering if anyone else would care to chime in.

Initially, I will probably just use this for razors. Here's the stone: http://www.chefknivestogo.com/hinak.html

Thanks in advance.

Remind me of your progression up to the osuka asagi, I not remember well sometimes, what's my name again? Haha just joking I remember now it's dam I forgot again. Peace

JB,

Progression will probably be bevel set with 1200 Bester, then 4k & 8k Gesshin, then j-nat, then .5 CrO2, .25 diamond, both on balsa. Not sure yet if I'll use the nanocloth or not..........

And, I'm assuming this stone needs to be sealed, and perhaps mounted?

That was my first J Nat, too! Now I have 3 other J Nats on the way from CKTG: an Amakusa, Shobu San and a Kyushu Ohmura :) I just put mine on a waterstone base so far, haven't sealed it or mounted it permanently yet.

Sounds good, mounted yes it will help its usually not flat on the bottom but sealed naw I just build a slurry with my dmt and go from their the lighter the pressure the sharper it will get and than move onto the other nano and stuff. I envy you it's going to be fun I remember when I first got mine. Peace jmbullman

You are going to have the sharpest stuff around my brother. Damn you'll split atoms at that progression. Jmbullman

BTW, I have a 10k SS, but it's so-o--o-o-o-o-o-o slow it's just not fun to use, altho' it does make pretty edges. Also have a 16k GS, but do I need it between the 8k and the j-nat?

Oh, so many things to play with!

No not unless u want to backstroke, I have the imimashi 10 and for use as a sharpening stone I have to be super careful but if you soak it for 20 mins or so and build a good slurry it will increase the edge up to 12-15 k imop if you backstroke with the heavy slurry, I have cut my fingers more with that stone trying to use it as a sharpening stone more times than I can count, it grabs and bites like a pit bull going after a bone it always has if not it would be a hell of a stone. I sold my ss 10k because I had the same problem. Peace jmbullman

I find the shave from the ozuku right off the stone to be a bit uhh prickly without some kind of after treatment.

Still getting used to it though, and the new razor.

Eamon,

What do you do after? Just the strop or do you do compounds, etc.?
