Experience with welsh stones

Thu Jul 18, 2013 2:17 pm

Does anybody have any experience with purple slate welsh natural stones as a finisher? Intriguing prices, and some seem to say they are sufficient for a finisher. Anybody here on my go to forum have any experience?

I wouldn't class it as a finisher, no, but it has its place. For the price point, there are better, and worse. I have a 3 x 12 x 1", I also have the darker slate, which is a finer stone, and is ok as a finisher. Properly lapped, both will work, but will not give the sharpest, or smoothest finish. I bought a Zulu Grey as well, a nice finisher. I also have J-Nats. The rabbit hole is deep!

Bottom line, you can, and likely will buy more stones, better stones, in pursuit of the optimum edge. I bought each of the stones, to "see for myself" At best, you try it, and like it. At worst, you try it, and its not for you... Regardless it will hone, to the degree you want? Maybe... To the degree a straight fanatic is looking for? Probably not...

OK, thanks for the input fellas. I just got referred to them by a guy I bought a shave ready Heljestrand from, and it was most definitely shave ready. I don't have a lot of experience to know the best of the best, but I know this glided effortlessly and painlessly, compared to honing I had done at lower grits that was scrapping the hair off, and I was just able to bear it. I just got an Imanishi 10k and some diamond spray, I am hoping it will up my game a bit. But yes I am sure you are right Pierre, my stone collection has not reached its height. Not by a long shot.

Pierre, would you recommend the zulu grey? I've been eyeballing one for a while now. Currently finish on nubatama 10k followed by 1u diamond spray on felt. Not the smoothest finish when i'm done but they're sharp :)

I really like the Zulu. There is a full thread on them over at Straight Razor Place, Best info on them actually. I had mine custom cut, 12"x3"x1" I'd recommend them without hesitation. You can also get a slury stone if you like. I've spoken with several respected sharpeners, and this stone is in their line up.

Pierre,
What would you classify as better for the price? The welsh purple stones seem to be far cheaper than the zulu grey, and any Japanese natural I have seen. Now it seems clear that you feel those are superior stones as finishers, but they are far more expensive and I am cheap. What else in a comparable price range do you consider a better finisher?

if your cheap stick with one stone as a coticule.
