Also i have been having a problem when i transition from 1000 grit to 3000 grit. 1000 feels sharp, shaves hair comfortably and slices phone book paper clean but when i move up to the 3000 grit stone it does not shave hair , feel sharp or seem to cut as cleanly. I thought i was messing up the angle but i went extra slow and used sharpie for every few passes to make sure i was not going over angle and the problem still exists. any tips on what i could be doing wrong?

The naniwa 3K is soft so try stropping on that stone (use edge trailing strokes only) and see if that improves your edge. What can happen is the edge can snow plow into the stone and roll your edge instead of cutting the steel and this would solve that problem if that is what's going on.

+1 on ending with edge-trailing strokes.

Also, if your edge isn't deburred right off the 1k, shaving hair is meaningless, because you could just be shaving hair and cutting paper with a wire edge. If the 3k rolls or removes the wire edge, you will be left without a good cutting edge. You should either remove the burr by pulling it off after the 1k stone, or just build a burr and keep it aligned(a wire edge) and wear it down on higher grit stones and strops. I use medium grit stones that cut pretty fast, so I am partial to just pulling the thing off after the 1k stone and going from there.

Not meaning to jump on the bandwagon but you all are both rite i start edge trailing strokes after my 600 chosera and even after that I run my blade through a cork or the felt block that mark has i double up on everything I guess u can call it overkill but if it walks like a duck you now the rest. And I also make sure I start with a slurry on all stones and that does help but i did see a gentleman flatten his stone without rinsing the metal award off and I could see it ground into the stone afterwards. I advise against that. Write that down and stay thirsty my friends. Peace jmbullman
