Honestly I think you are completely off base. The article you posted clearly states this is a hack in its second paragraph
"It's one thing to use "hack" to refer to anything crafty or resourceful. Appropriate even."

And what the guy did is crafty and resourceful using household materials to get a result that you usually need a commerce piece of equipment to get.

The act of the hack in this case is using ordinary household materials to get a desired result that replaces commercial machinery.
