Doi Yanagi finished on the Han-Han stone

Fri Jul 06, 2012 2:04 am

I've always liked to sharpen large bevel blades and a Yanagi is like icing on the cake. This one was larger than the one I made a video with but just as much fun to sharpen. When it arrived (sorry no pics) the tip was rather round and in the center the edge had a good size chip. I started with the Nubatama 120 Bamboo stone re-setting the geometry, fixing the chip, and bringing the tip back to nice and pointy. I moved on to my 400 bamboo stone to prep for the 2k bamboo stone but it didn't work out as expected so I went with old faithful, my 1k & 6k Arashiyama stones, with a final finish on the Nubatama Han-Han stone. The Han-Han stone is around 10k maybe higher in finish and producing wildly sharp edges easily giving a comfortable face shave.

I really liked the contrast of the metals produced by the progression of stones, just making something sharp gets boring after a while so ya gotta make it look good too :D

Looks like a great job. Hopefully someday I can steady out my hands and get some consistent results like that. Is that a Misono Yanagi? Couldn't think of anyone else who puts dragons on their knives.

Hi !! Nice work

If you want an even more even finish on the steel, you can use a soft uchigumori fingerstone, it will just even out the contrasts.

look at my small picture below. Im more into the good looks than a razor edge :) Well almost :)
