Do you need to soak Shapton Pro stones?

Tue Jul 02, 2013 11:20 pm

Mark,
Thank you for letting me know. It's nice to get that sort of customer service.
One thing: I've been seeing some conflicting instructions online regarding whether these stones need to be soaked prior to use. Care to weigh in on the correct method?
Thank You,
Ryan

Hi Susan,

I've read some conflicting instructions regarding Shapton stones
online, perhaps you could set me straight before my order arrives. I
purchased the 3 stone pro series set.

Some say to just spray the stones and go to work, while others say
they need to be soaked to prevent skipping and catching. I'm a
woodworker, and one of the reasons I went with Shapton is their
reputation for not dishing as rapidly as other waterstones. I
understand that soaking the stones will soften them somewhat, which in
my mind would lead to faster dishing, especially with narrow chisels.

What is your company's recommendation?

splash some water on the stones and start sharpening. if they need some water add some. shapton does not recommend soaking the stones.
