Difference between Kohetsu and

Fri Feb 28, 2014 6:24 am

What is the difference between
Kohetsu Aogami Super 240mm Gyuto
and
Richmond Laser Aogami Super 240mm Gyuto?

What make the last more expensive than the first?

They are made from different shops. The Kohetsu is a small factory operation and they can produce more volume. They have a pretty simple and plain finish on them with a mirror polish edge and a nice but simple handle on them.

The Richmond AS Laser is done by a much smaller blacksmith shop and there is more hand work. They have a very nice bead blast finish on them and they're hand engraved with much nicer semi custom handles on them.

The Kohetsu line of knives seems to get great reviews by everybody (for good reason), I know I'm pleased with mine. I'm sure the Richmond AS laser is also great, can't go wrong with either one.

I only own the Kohetsu, but as I understand it, in the 240mm length, the Laser AS will be thinner behind the edge.

I agree with Mark, the Kohetsu has a simple finish, it is a deal for the performance per dollar, but lacks the character of some other knives out there. That said, I highly recommend it for what it is.

The details really. Like Mark said......you're talking about a high production volume knife in the Kohetsu and a small batch production in the Laser AS. That's not to say the Kohetsu is any worse a knife, just that it is what it is. :)

From what I've seen the kohetsu is really just a performance based knife versus the richmond which has better F&F.

Both are great it just depends on if you want to drop the extra cash on aesthetics

This one has pretty much been summed up.

The devil here is in the details, Handmade costs a bit more, lower volume creates a higher demand; a higher demand creates increased price.
