I posted this video within another thread in reply to someone of whom was dulling their knives by cleaning them w/Scotchbrite pads &/or steelwool on their cutting edges. Nothing special... simple common sense stuff, but it was requested I post it here:
Scotch brite is clearly abrasive. In fact it comes in several levels of coarseness in both pads and belts for belt grinders and can be quite aggressive. So given it's level of aggressiveness, I feel it is worth while to treat it as a strop and maintain proper angles when using them.
I use a yellow towel that I get at Costco by the pack that people use for drying off cars to not leave spots on it. It gives a noticeably drier surface on the knife. This restricts rust formation and also allows you a more accurate assessment of edge sharpness when putting an edge on your knife. I also use it to dry my hands as wet hands, especially cold wet hands, give a reduced perception of sharpness. Even the slight remaining moisture on the blade negatively impacts performance when seeing how well it cuts paper.
