We have a massive amount of Edge Pro products so we figured it would be good to have a whole section on how to use the machine and what to use on it.

Chosera set questions

Tue Jul 31, 2012 2:39 pm

Hi, I just got my Edge Pro Chosera set and have a few questions about its use:

  • The EP 400 and the Chosera 400 that come with the set seem to be very close in grit (according to the Grand Unified Grit Chart at bladeforums). Is there any reason to use the EP stone?
  • At what grit do you recommend to stop going back and forth over the edge and start using a stropping motion? 3k, 5k, 10k?
  • What kind of edge should I expect after the 10k stone, after I learn to use all the stones properly?
  • (More of a general question): how do you know when to stop with a given stone, after you've flipped the burr a few times? I believe people spend less and less time on each side to get a smaller and smaller burr, but it's unclear to me how many passes are best.

Thanks all for your help!

The low grit stones wear out faster than the high grit ones so just hold onto it and use it when the Chosera 400 wears out.

I usually strop on the 10K only. I go back and forth on the 5k but I use almost no pressure.

It should shave. I would still strop after the 10 K with some balsa and boron carbide or chromium oxide. Or try the kangaroo with diamond spray or cbn spray.

You should make sure you get a burr on the entire edge on the first stone. When you get that right I usually move pretty quickly thought the rest of the stones. I usually count about 10 strokes move along the blade and 10 more until I finish. I don't feel for a burr after the first stone. It's hard to feel them as you move up the grits.
