Finally took the camera out yesterday. Sliced scallops, peeled and deveined shrimp, chile, tomato and cilantro. Salt generously, drown in lime juice and rest for about an hour. Serve with tostadas and avocado. Need a better other-people's-houses prep knife. If only there was some kind of online store for high-end Japanese knives... :P

I can almost taste the flavors looking at the dish. Pair that with a bottle of rosé on an outside patio and I'd be in heaven.

Ah, thanks.

It looks like I messed up the link for the first picture.

Unfortunately the most expensive part of that dish these days are the darn limes. A buck a lime...ridiculous. Your original post inspired me to make a very similar dish tomorrow evening as part of our wedding anniversary dinner.

Let me know how that turns out!

Also, where do you live? I'm in Mexico where limes are (usually) pretty cheap, but there are other citrus fruits you can use.

If it looks and tastes good, I'll post a pic. I'm in Atlanta, GA. The claim here in the US is the rapid price increase is tied to combination of heavy rains last year and the drug cartels in Michoacan muscling in on the business. Most of the furor is focused on the latter.

There was a shortage here that ran.. I want to say Feb through Mar, but prices are back to reasonable. 22 pesos a kilo retail, which comes to what, 75 US cents/lb?

Limes have been going back down, thank goodness. They were a real premium for a long time.

11.30 pesos a kilo at my neighborhood fruit store, which is about 40c /lb.

If you guys are still paying scarcity prices someone is screwing you.

Dakki - They are still $0.99 a lime here in Atlanta. I put one on a scale at the grocery and it was roughly .25 lbs. So let's call it $4.00 /lb. :)
