Can I perma soak my water stones?

Thu Sep 20, 2012 2:54 pm

Mark

I bought the bester1200 the suhiro rika 5000 and the naniwa snow white stones from you. While I am greatly enjoying the stones and the stones as a system produce a superior edge on my woodworking tools, I find it somewhat inconvenient to transport my equipment and soak the stones at each use. Are any of these stones candidates for living in the water? I think I already know the answer for the snow white due to the resin binder but if I am wrong and any or all can live in the water let me know.
By the way, I dont know if I thanked you for that very nice piece of finishing stone or not but thank you, it is very nice and works great on my chisels.

I don't normally perma soak my stones but I know lots of guys do this.

The bester 1200 is ok to keep in water.

The Rika is ok as well.

I've never heard any reports about the snow white but I'm betting this stone would degrade if you kept it in water. Maybe I'm wrong...

I have kept my bester perma-soaking since i got it, just so its always ready.(actually i have never tried it under soaked).
the Rika however i had left in the water when i first got it, but didn't want to buy a bigger container to soak both (mine has the base), so let it dry. it seems to soak fairly quickly IMHO, so i just let it soak as I use the bester.
No experience with snow white yet, so cant speak to that.

Thanks for the education guys. Big help for a newbie waterstone user like me. The environment I am in right now is not condusive to soaking time as it is a rather fast paved school so I want to do the perma soak yhing for convenience sake. Thanks again

So, I can report back that the stones mentioned can indeed be soaked permanently with no ill effect. Thr bester1200 and the suehiro rika that is, not the snow white. Made things much easier for me.
