Hello all, I'm travelling to Japan soon and looking for good knife shop recommendations for Tokyo and Kyoto. Particularly I'd love to get my hands on knives like Masakage, Doi, Suisun, Fujiwara, Takeda, and Sakai Takayuki. Any recommendations would be great!

I'll ask Shosui where you can find his knives. My guess is any store that sells his knives will have others of interest too. He writes me back fast so I should have an answer by tomorrow. If you had time and were really into it you could go visit his black smith shop but it's a long haul from Tokyo.
Also the Tsukiji Fish Market has a bunch of knife shops and is a popular place to shop in general. If you go early you can check out the fish market in action.

I believe, and this is based purely on reading (never been to Japan unfortunately), most of the retailers like Suisin, Nenohi, Masamoto, etc. have their own stores. These retailers contract out to makers who sell to them. For instance, Doi does a lot of work for Suisin....but he also makes knives for other retailers. The Kiya store is another great knife store...but it's more of a general store as I understand. The sell house branded Shigefusa's.
As Mark has said, there are a lot of great knife stores around the Tsukiji Market.

Thanks for the replies, I will definitely check out Kiya and the Tsukiji area. Perhaps more exciting, Shosui-san's Takashimaya visit fits my schedule perfectly, will be amazing to meet the master in person. I appreciate the effort Mark!

I Highly recomend tsukiji, besides the great knife manufacturers and merchants the market itself is a powerhouse of all kinds of rare and exotic fish, wares and tools. Its recomendable that you get there early so you can catch some of the action!

If you're gonna be in Kyoto then check out Aritsugu Kyoto. They don't sell outside of Japan so you know you'll have a knife that noone else might have except for those that have been to their shop.
