Hi guys, brand new to sharpening and playing with a couple Chicago cutley knives before I try anything expensive. The sides of my thumbs next to my nail turn raw and start bleeding. Does this happen to anyone?
I'm using a 1200 better.

So sharpen the knives and not your thumbs.
I rubbed a bloody raw spot or two one some fingers when learning. After some practice and several bandaids your learn to keep you fingers off the stone!

+1 to what Jeff said. I sharpened my thumbs the first time I tried freehand sharpening. Its a painful lesson, but not one soon forgotten

Yep. When I first sharpened I dragged my thumb on the stone to help hold a consistent angle. That only happened once. I almost wore through one of my nails in one spot, and rubbed off the skin on part of my thumb. You learn to not do that over time, and how to hold angles without touching the stone.

Hah, I remember doing that to myself too. A little more practice and you'll learn to keep your skin and nails off the stones.

Sometimes I get my finger pads too close to the edge, but never had an issue with my thumbs.

We've all done it. It's not specific to 1200 grit. You can do this with a fine grit stone too. It's just more gradual. Using body parts for a guide is something you will outgrow. The blood on the stone is of no advantage

If you want to see an extreme example of this, see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gebk5W8YJc8
He did finish the job at least, despite the blood loss. Disclaimer, if the sight of blood bothers you, probably best to avoid this one.
Yes, one eventually learns that keeping all the skin on your fingers is advantageous.

He had a blood transfusion after the video and lived.

I've never had my hands bleed on the stone. But hey, blood is what 90% water? good lubrication if you ask me!
