I have a Takeo Murata (Buho) aogami blue paper steel (blue #1 steel) with HRC of 61-63.
From what I've learned so far, 1000 grit is a good all-around stone. I wondering if there's any particular type or brand of sharpening stone that is well suited to this knife metal type.
Thanks very much!

Thanks. By the way, I just realized I posted this subject in the wrong category. Sorry.

"Best suited" Is very subjective. What attributes do you value in a stone? For example: If you are looking for convenience, some look for Splash and go, some permasoak. For finish, some people go for polish with a higher grit , some go for evenness with softer stones. Crisp razor like edges, some like hard stones, others like aggressive/fast cutting stones.

What appeals to you?

Convenience and finish are not important to me, just a nice sharp edge. I don't mind spending time in the process. I just thought that this particular type of metal might have certain sharpening requirements. Thanks.

Bester 1200 or Nubatama Ume 1K medium are good ~1000 grit stones, but that edge is a bit coarse for my tastes! Rika 5K and strop leaves an aggressively toothy edge, great for most stuff in the kitchen! Or a Hakka or Aoto J nat after the 1K stone.

Most any stone will work with that steel, so just buy what seems to suit you best.

Shapton's are very hard
SuperStones are extremely soft

Other stones lie in between and each have their own attributes.

I'd get a 1k, and 6k stone......say the Ume 1k, and Suehiro Rika....both will work well with that steel.

Why limit youraelf to just one stone.

I would grab the 3 piece nubatama set. Its a great way to set yourself up.
