Is this supposed to be the half priced alternative to the full sized plate? Is it suitable as a stone flattening tool? At half the price of the regular Atoma it's very tempting. Wouldn't the size be a little small for stones?

It's not ideal for flattening. You can do it but ideally you want the plate to be about the same size or larger than the stone you're flattening so the plate doesn't ride the wave of the dished stone that you're trying to flatten.
