Are Arkansas stones better than Shapton Glass?

Sun Sep 15, 2013 4:10 pm

I have been using Arkansas stones for years and am thinking about trying the Shaptons. Do any of you think the Shaptons would be a step up?

I've never got good results with arkys. My shaptons on the other hand I've never got poor results from. Easy to see which I would recommend.

Arkansas stones are natural oil stones and are probably the slowest sharpening method available. Arkansas stones are a classic sharpening stone used by many including myself but basically any modern synthetic waterstone will be waaaaaaay faster and more efficient.

Shaptons, or really any synthetic stone are going to be much more effective and efficient. but...I still use my Arkys every once in awhile and still really enjoy it. I still get great edges of my Arkansas, it just takes me a lot longer to get there.
