I have my dads old black Arkansas I use for routine final edge polish, but it's a bit small at 2 x 6. Do you have an alternative to consider? 8, 9, or 10 x 2 or 3 would work. I may just ebay a larger black but thought I'd ask. I'm not a sharpening fanatic, surgical level is fine.

Great stone set and will work much better than ark stones.

I've got the 3 spyderco stones that top out at around 2k (!), but they are small in width.
I'm sure this set is worth it but I'm spent down this month.
are the stones flat out of box?
would there be any reason to upgrade? if so, what's the endgame?
I'd like to get it right the first time and not buy a further collection of unused stones.
I don't mind soaking stones, but I'd like something hard so I don't have to flatten each time, at least for the final polish stone.
anyway, maybe next month. looking forward to my santoku!

The stones in that set are superior to the stuff you have now. If you wanted something that was splash and go you should take a look at the shaptons.

I almost bought the SGS last time and should have.
The Spyderco is great, but not for this.
I'm going list for trade:
Spyderco Sharpmaker, full kit, little used /w diamond rods
+ Spyderco ruby stones 2 x 8 M (brown), 00, 000 (white). low use
I gotta look in my box: boride stomes, edm, etc see what else.
see what shakes.
meantime I'll probably buy a SGS 4,000 or 6,000 for now.

The Arashiyama set is a good set. They can be used as splash and go, they soak up very little water. They are flat out of the box and dish slow. It's not a set you will out grow.
