Adding to my two sided stone.

Hi Mark, I was hoping you could help me in some stone knowledge. I currently have a dual stone with 400 on one side and 1000 on the other. I'm looking at purchasing something in the 5000-6000 range then another higher up. I work in a kitchen so I use my knives everyday, right now mostly a mizuno tanrenjo white steel 2 santoku and a takeda bunko. I can sharpen them pretty well now but would like to continue to learn and get better. I was looking at the naniwa super stone 5000 grit with and without base as they got good reviews from everyone and the price range was nice but I'm still not sure. Any input you have here would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brandon,

The stone you want to add will work well with your combo stone. The Naniwa superstone 5K is a good stone. It's soft, wears a little quickly and polishes really well. The superstones really shine (pardon the punn) in the upper grits and I don't personally care for them in the lower grits.

I do think there are some good competing options in that general grit range and price range.

Nubatama Bamboo 5k is a winner. Ken did a good video on the stone on the page so you can watch how it works and get a little lesson on sharpening at the same time:

The Suehiro Rika is a good stone. I've sharpened my way through a whole stone and it's just a pleasurable stone that works well on a wide variety of steels. At about $50 it's a good deal. I would choose this one over the Superstone:

There are a few other good options but I don't want to overwhelm you.

BRANDON <> +1 on the Rika. "Pleasurable" is truly appropriate, but just as competent.

I'll have to third the Rika....definitely my favorite stone in the 3 to 6k range. I can jump from it to the Naniwa 10k Superstone easily, or leave the edge at the Rika and have a very sharp knife.
