A little Help Please!

Hi, New to the forum and looking for a little help making a purchase.

I am getting some knives as a gift for the parents of my Fiancé. They are a wonderful family and have introduced me to the pleasures of cooking. I wanted to do something nice to show my appreciation for how great they have been welcoming me into their family. I decided that a cooking related gift was appropriate as sharing meals with family is such an important part of their lives. They have great quality cookware and a fantastic kitchen, but to my untrained eye they seem to have dull worn out budget cutlery. I decided I would get them a knife set, and my research kept leading me back to your site! I thought the best way to get them something that they would like and use was to show them the site and we could all look at the knives and then I could sort of sneakily gauge their interests and preferences. I did so and here are the knives they really liked

Takeda Classic Mini Petty 100mm My Fiance loved this one
Richmond Fanatic Thin CLeaver The mom wants to try a cleaver
Sakai Takayuki Damascus 240 guyoto The dad thought this one was fantastic

I feel like I should get the ones they thought were best, but would like feedback in case I am making a glaring novice mistake.

I would also like to order a chef knife for our house at the same time, I would like to try the Takeda Classic 240 Guyoto (Matches the Fiances choice) I think it looks great and I generally like having things that need a little taking care of. (I sort of enjoy it in a weird way!)

I am right handed, a very novice cook, but seem to gravitate towards a rocking style of cutting (though that could evolve I suppose) I am an engineer and have a lot of experience with tools and metals, so maintenance and upkeep are not issues for me and generally performance/function is more important to me than style/form. I want a knife I can be proud of, keep for a long time and feel confident that I have a technically great cutting tool. best quality as a cutting tool is most important characteristic for me and budget is sub $500 for our knife and whatever it takes for the inlaws knives. I really want to do something nice for them!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your choices, so to steer you away would be just my personal thoughts getting in the way.

All are pretty solid choices.... and the ones they liked! So it is hard to go wrong with that.

BUT... I was once inexperienced with Japanese cutlery and made some purchasing mistakes, and there are things you should know.

The Takeda is carbon and has a certain amount of upkeep you have to be sure she is prepared for. Lemme guess, it was the heart on the blade that sold her? At 100mm, it is a bit small. It will perform well, but she will probably want something more versatile. Get something at a larger size. 120mm-150mm would be ideal. Plus, it's uber expensive.
The Richmond Fanatic sounds like a solid choice, but a nakiri would be a better choice. It will perform just as well, and it is lighter & easier to handle. Although smaller, she could always grab her husband's gyuto when needed!
The Sakai Takayuki is a great knife from what I read on the forums, but what knife is he currently using and at what size? If he is using a western-handled knife at 8 inches, I would definitely get him a 210mm with some belly.

Hi thanks for the responses greatly appreciated!

I think I am going to stick with what the family "chose", and hopefully their initial impressions from the site will serve them well.

A question though, is the surface of the Takeda knives smooth or rough? it is hard to tell from the photos...

STACEN <> The Kuro-Uchi finish is sort of smooth, but in the areas where the finish is mottled it has an uneven finish to it. I wouldn't call it rough, but it's not a consistent & smooth finish.
