8k Stone

Mon Jun 17, 2013 9:39 pm

I'm wanting to add an 8k stone to the toy box. Am considering the Snow White or Bamboo 8k. Opinions?

I love my Kitayama 8K and can highly recommend it . . . but I cannot knock either of the two you mention.

Haven't used a bamboo, but I seriously can't say enough good things about the snow white. It is a seriously good 8k stone, very hard to make it clog and it cuts well, but not so fast you have to worry about making the edge too delicate. Short of 15k for razors, this is where I tend to stop on most steel used in the kitchen. Jumping from 8k to the strops is no problem at all as long as you follow it with nothing smaller than half micron.

It's a real tough call. Both are excellent stones. Since there aren't any 8k Bamboos in at the moment, it's a pretty easy choice. The Snow white is a Magnesia based stone, so it shares the good and bad characteristics of Magnesia based stones - excellent feel and feedback, but not a stone I would use for prolonged soaking. Also fits nicely between the 5 and 10k choceras but is a harder formulation than the 10k and way harder than the 5k. I have had no experience with it cracking or getting rough surface problems and to my knowledge no one else has reported it either, so I feel the Snow white is a safe recommendation.

Well since the Bamboo 8k is OOS, no descents + great reviews and I have an CKTG urge burning, the Snow White it is! I hope I get to the package before the wife sees it. Image
