I will say that I was surprised to hear that, and will just say it came from a very reliable source. Though I don't recall that being repeated publicly.

I wanted a wa handle, so went with the HD.

HD is a proprietary steel and the knives come from different companies and smiths. The blades may be similar in many ways but they are not the same blades.

The steel in the TKC is called a proprietary blend also. By TKC I mean the knife known by that name here on the forum.

If you ask Masae at Kikuichi NY, it will be called the "Molybdenum Gyuto" The TKC is a custom made only knife ordered from Japan.
Anyway, thats what you get when you ask them about it. I suppose that has to be true. The kikuichi website corroborates this information.
