1k to 8k?

Tue Jul 16, 2013 4:12 pm

Hi guys.

I am very partial to an edge created by refining a 1k ish edge by stropping it on a 5k or 6k stone. I'm not trying to get rid of all the 1k teeth hence the stropping and not sharpening.

I was about to get a 5k ninawa Ss stone but was thinking, given that I am not trying to grind out the 1k tooth completely, and given that I get better results with 6k over 3k, might an 8k be something worth trying?

you should stick with the 6k since you're happy with it then just strop on newspaper. see how that feels after stropping on some newspaper. 8k is overkill for daily use. it's great for sushi and sashimi and not for much else.

Although I can't disagree with franz per say, I do know some people who sharpen on a 1k and then strop on really high grit stones like the Naniwa 10k SS and love the edge it produces. So, trying it with an 8k in lieu of your current 5/6k strop might be a good idea....then again you might not like it.

Like you, I strop on a 6k after my 1k and like the results I get. Though I have yet to use it, I bought an 8k to try. That's 3/4 of the fun of this obsession is trying something new. I may love the 8k or hate it, we'll know after my next sharpening. If I don't like it I will sell it and try something else. Besides that, how else am I suppose to piss off the wife without buying more stones that I don't really need!
